BANGOR, Maine — Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with a July 31 fire at a James Street home. The teen has been charged with Class A felony arson.

Bangor police have not released the teen’s identity. The Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately return a message left late Thursday morning.

Police and fire crews were called to 12 James St. at about 9:45 a.m.

“A mother came home to give her 17-year-old son a ride to work and smelled smoke,” Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday morning. “She quickly discovered a bedroom in the house was burning and called for help.”

The woman’s son fled the scene, Edwards said.

The arson investigation by Bangor police Detective Cliff Worcester and the state fire marshal’s office led to the teen’s arrest on Wednesday afternoon, according to Edwards.

Edwards said he wasn’t sure where police found the 17-year-old, but that he remains in custody at the Charleston Correctional Facility.
