BANGOR – Annie E. Smith, RN, 93, wife of the late Allen Smith, passed on to be with her Lord, July 28, 2012, at a Brewer health care center. She was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Bangor, daughter of Blanchard H. and Agnes B. (Archer) Ellis.
Annie was a 1938 graduate of East Corinth Academy and a 1943 graduate of Knox County General Hospital, Rockland, where she received her training to be a registered nurse. She practiced nursing in Rockland and Bangor. Most of her nursing career was at Bangor Mental Health Institute where she was employed for 30 years, retiring in 1984 as a charge nurse and supervisor. She spent the greater part of her service there in the Pavilion Building and was the overseer of the Program on Aging. Annie was the first nursing supervisor of the building when it opened in 1950. She was a charter member of the Bangor branch of Maine State Employers’ Association and a former member of American Nurses Association.
Annie is survived by two sons, Travis A. Smith and wife, Wanda, of Holden, and Gary A. Smith and wife, Karin, of Bangor; four grandchildren, Shaunna R. Smith of Brewer, Justin A. Smith and wife, Jessica of Patterson, La., Jennifer E. Smith, and Kevin A. Smith, both of Bangor; one brother, Stephen Ellis of Corinth; three sisters, Rita Beckwith of Bangor, Blanch Peterson and husband, Karl of Corinth, and Rena Smart of Long Island, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Allen, she was predeceased by two brothers, Harold Ellis and Lee Ellis; and one sister, Roma Whitney.
A memorial service will be held noon Thursday, Aug. 2, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Stephanie Salinas, pastor of First Baptist Church of Bangor, officiating. Interment will be at Kenduskeag Village Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the memorial service Thursday at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
