Berwick brush fire spreads into the woods

By Oliver Jenkins, Foster's Daily Democrat

BERWICK, Maine — Several local fire departments responded to the scene of a 2½- to 3-acre one-alarm brush fire off Togue Brook Road in Thursday night.

The fire, which was reported around 7 p.m., quickly spread throughout the area.

Berwick, South Berwick, North Berwick, and Lebanon all responded to the scene of the fire, which was located several hundred yards off Togue Brook Road in a heavily wooded area of Berwick, according to Crew Chief Nicholas Goulet of the Berwick Fire Department.

Crews from Berwick, North Berwick and Somersworth, N.H., used forestry vehicles to help combat the blaze. These vehicles, as Goulet explained, are designed specifically to go off road and handle rough terrain.

As of approximately 9:30 p.m. firefighters had the blaze under control. Goulet said crews would most likely return in the morning as a safety precaution to ensure the area is still secure.

The cause of Thursday’s fire is unknown at this time.

American Medial Response also responded to the scene as a safety precaution to treat any firefighters injured while fighting the blaze.
