Maine Athletic Club 8th graders win again at AAU nationals

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Maine Athletic Club improved its record to 2-0 at the AAU 8th Grade Basketball Division I National Tournament Sunday with a 60-39 victory over a team from Florida at the Wide World of Sports complex.

The win guarantees that the team, made up primarily of players from the Hampden area, will be one of two teams that will advance from its four-team pool to the national tournament portion of the event. Half of the 104 participating Division I teams will advance from the 26 pools in the age group.

Tom Coyne of Falmouth scored 23 points and Brendan McIntyre of Hampden added 19 to lead MAC to victory. Conar Moore of Hampden added nine points, Riley Robinson of Dixfield five points and Jake Black of Hampden four points for the winners.

MAC trailed 21-19 at halftime, but outscored the Florida team 41-18 after intermission to secure the victory. MAC’s lead was just five points late in the third quarter, but 3-point goals by Robinson and Moore stretched the margin to 11 points entering the fourth quarter.

MAC won despite having just six players available, as Nick Gilpin of Hampden continues to nurse an ankle injury suffered during the team’s opening-game victory Saturday.

The team was scheduled to conclude pool play Monday against a Virginia team seeded ninth in the 8th-grade tournament field.
