THE FORKS, Maine — A local man was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after being struck by a pickup truck on Friday morning.
William Norman, 69, of The Forks was walking on the side of the road along Route 201 to go fishing when he was struck by a green 2005 Dodge pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Kevin Crossman of Waterville, according to Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. The emergency call came in at 7:12 a.m.
Norman was struck by the passenger side of the truck and thrown into the guard rails. Gottardi said the initial investigation determined that Crossman fell asleep at the wheel before hitting Norman.
Norman “sustained possible severe leg injuries and he was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center,” said Gottardi in a statement.
Cpl. Michael Ross is investigating and reconstructing the accident with forensic mapping assistance by the Maine State Police, according to Gottardi.
Crossman was not injured and was not immediately charged.
The Somerset County District Attorney’s Office will review the case once the investigation is complete, said Gottardi.
Somerset County Deputy Dave Cole, and personnel from the Maine State Police and West Forks Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene.
