Wildlife abounds at Essex Street Marsh

The Essex Street Marsh is a great place to observe nature. For me, it’s great location to just drop in on while between errands and obligations. Responsibilities and rain seemed to time themselves perfectly to limit my outside adventures to just a few and local. This past week was such a time. All my images today were taken at the Essex Street. Marsh. It simply amazes me how much wildlife there is right in town.

Although it does not show well in the photo, the American redstart looks like a juvenile, displaying just a touch of yellow on its flanks. I’ve read about the green heron being at the marsh, but in several years of looking, I’d never seen it. Patience paid off last week with a great view of this bird. The captured image does not do the critter justice. It will leave me trying to improve upon it.

Butterflies were plentiful and the little wood-satyr posed nicely for me. I caught the local muskrat towing a reed across the pond and a painted turtle enjoying the sun.

A yellow warbler sang a song, but my favorite image was the juvenile mallard flapping its new wings … well almost wings.
