Culinary TV race blows into Washington County

MILBRIDGE, Maine — Sleepy little seaside Lubec will apparently be the finish line for “The Great Food Truck Race,” which blew through Down East Maine Monday afternoon, pausing for lunch at the 44 North eatery in Milbridge.

Now in its third season, the Food Network’s reality TV show pits eight teams of culinary wizards who work from mobile kitchens as they travel cross-country to see which truck’s street-food menu proves the most popular.

At stake is a $50,000 cash prize and a food truck worth another $50,000. At each location, food truck crews set up shop and sell their epicurean wares. The truck that attracts the least sales in a defined window of retail opportunity is eliminated, while the other trucks move down the road to the next competition.

Eight teams were in the running when the race began May 1 in Long Beach, Calif. As the culinary circus pulled into Washington County on Monday, only two teams were left standing. Each team — the Jersey girls who do Italian and the Korean sausage guys from L.A. — is convinced it will kick butt when the competition winds down in Lubec, or wherever the show’s producers tell them they are headed next.

“We never know, not even from hour to hour,” said Jaclyn Kolsby, whose Nonna’s Kitchenette team, like Seoul Sausage, survived competitions in Long Beach; Flagstaff, Ariz.; Amarillo, Texas; Fayetteville, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Cleveland; Boston and Portland. “We assume we’ll finish up in Lubec, but they could say, at the last minute, that we’re headed somewhere else, so we don’t know if this is the last city or not.”

“We specialize in Korean barbecue-flavored sausages, and our food has sold very, very well,” said Yong Kim of the Seoul Sausage team.

The Food Channel plans to air the show’s new season beginning on Aug. 19.
