TRENTON, Maine — The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of a fire that Sunday night gutted a barn at the corner of Oak Point and Goose Cove roads, according to the local fire chief.
The fire was reported around 7 p.m. by a passerby, Trenton Fire Chief Richard Gray said Monday morning. He said no people or animals were in the barn at the time. The barn appears to have been used mostly for storage, he said.
Gray said the barn was gutted and will have to be torn down. He said the department still has to talk to the owners, whom he did not identify. The owners live on Mount Desert Island, he said. He does not know whether the building was insured.
“We don’t know a whole lot right now,” Gray said. “It’s still under investigation.”
Gray said approximately 35 firefighters from Trenton, Ellsworth, Hancock and Lamoine responded to the blaze.
