ORONO, Maine — The Orono Bog Boardwalk is the site where knitters and stitchers will take part in World Wide Knit in Public Day, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 9. Those who knit, crochet, do needle felting, and stitchers of all persuasions are invited to bring a portable project, a chair and lunch. Attendees may spend the day or stay for an hour or two. The rain date is Sunday, June 10.

Mary Bird, an organizer of the event, advised that if the weather is truly dreadful, stitchers can knit in public at some favorite indoor place. Participants also should plan for the fact that black flies also may be in attendance by bringing bug repellent to foil the flies.

Part of the pleasure of the day will be a stroll along the boardwalk where participants can soak up the scenery and use the colors, textures and shapes of the foliage and landscape as inspiration for projects.

Stitchers are invited to create a 6-inch square to donate to the Bog Blanket Project. Fibers used should be natural, such as wool, alpaca, etc.; or cotton, linen or other plant fiber. Colors and textures should be inspired by the bog. Volunteers will sew the squares together to make one or more comforters that will be auctioned in October as a fundraiser to support bog boardwalk maintenance and operation. Those unable to attend the Knit in Public event, but who would like to make a square or squares for the blanket project may send them to: Orono Bog Boardwalk, P.O. Box 12, Orono 04473. Include your name, address, fiber content of the yarn used, and a line or two about what inspired you. For information about the blanket project, email

Those who want to do “homework” before the event will find photographs and information about wildflowers, birds and other aspects of the bog, and directions on how to get there at The list of bird photographs is a long one, ensuring that stitchers will find plenty of inspiration. The flower photo list also makes a great starting point for creating a bog-inspired piece. Information and photographs of the adjacent Bangor City Forest are posted at

Bird, whose husband, Jim, is the director of the bog boardwalk, said the plan is to make the World Wide Knit in Public Day at the boardwalk an annual event.
