Rotary Club announces race plans as part of Family Fun Day in Freeport

FREEPORT, Maine — The Freeport Rotary Club will sponsor its 17th annual Close to the Coast 5K and 10K Road Races Saturday, June 2, at Winslow Park in Freeport. The race is part of the Winslow Park Family Fun Day. All the events and park admission are free of charge.

The event will start with a Kids’ 1K Fun Run at 10 a.m. with prizes provided by Wilbur’s of Maine. Hot dogs, ice cream, games, swimming, activities, a playground and a moon bounce house will be available. Oceanside camping, for a fee, is available for those who want to stay overnight.

The races will start at 9 a.m. with race registration taking place 7:15-8:45 a.m. The registration fee is $20 per participant with proceeds going to student educational scholarships and to local community projects through the Freeport Rotary Club.

Prizes for the top two finishers in each age category are assorted fruit pies from Orchard Hill Farm in Hebron. The course is run on quiet roads and forest trails along the ocean in Winslow Park, the home of the Lobsterman Triathlon.

Last year, 250 runners took part in the 2011 Close to the Coast Road Race. Race director Jim Hendricks hopes to exceed that number this year. Each year the race raises approximately $4,000, which is then given back to the Freeport community through student scholarships and local services. For information, contact Hendricks at drjah@fihc.comcastbiz.net or 865-1183.
