Bangor seniors ‘acting out’ to raise money for Hammond Street center

BANGOR — Local seniors are “acting out” to raise funds for the Hammond Street Senior Center and public is invited.

Members of the Hammond Street Senior Center’s Still Playing Theater Troupe are staging an original play as a benefit to the center. Written and directed by Nancy Taylor, “The Skylight Club” is filled with songs, dances and laughs. Taylor, a local playwright and director, teaches acting classes at the senior center.

The play is cast entirely of senior center members and features Executive Director Kathy Bernier and Member Activities and Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Gilks. Member volunteers have built a stage, designed sets and solicited props and sponsorships to make the play possible.

“It is wonderful to see so many local seniors getting involved,” Gilks said. “Many have never acted before, not that you would ever know it. Every day we take to the stage for practice, I am again amazed at everyone’s talent. There are so many ways to age and, as we say around here, members are ‘aging creatively.’”

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 18-19, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the senior center. Tickets are $10 and available for purchase at Hammond Street Senior Center or may be reserved by calling 262-5532.
