ROCKLAND, Maine — The new headquarters of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Friends of Maine Seabird Islands will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12.

The center is located on Water Street in Rockland.

The U.S. government through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department purchased the building in April 2010 for $695,000. The building had been one of the series of buildings owned by MBNA when they moved into the South End in 2000.

The city of Rockland has the property valued at $1.5 million. The property is tax-exempt.

Interior renovations have been completed but the center is still in the process of developing the exhibits. The art gallery will be open throughout the open house and will feature watercolor artist Meryl Henderson, woodcarver Hank Tyler, wildlife photographer Kirk Rogers and historical photographs of Rockland by Elmer Montgomery.

Giveaways will be available for children as well as costumed guest sightings.

The schedule of events include a slide show compilation of seabirds and offshore, coastal Maine, featuring photographer Rogers. There will be bird bingo with prizes at 10:30 a.m. and noon, and a slide presentation on Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Maine’s Seabird Islands from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and again from 1 to 1:30 p.m.

Extra parking will be available at the public parking lot behind the Chamber office.
