LEWISTON, Maine — A firefighter with the Lewiston Fire Department was arrested Thursday after Maine Drug Enforcement agents said they observed him buying crack cocaine.

Peter Morrell, 47, of 21 Cleaves St., Auburn, was arrested at 3:27 p.m. in a parking lot at Sabattus Street and East Avenue and charged with possession of crack.

He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he made bail about 5 p.m.

For several years over the past decade, Morrell was one of the department’s fire inspectors. He was dismissed from that position two years ago but later rehired as a firefighter.

Fire Chief Paul LeClair said Thursday that he was aware that Morrell had been arrested but he had no further comment on the matter.
