Teacher evaluation bill awaits LePage’s OK

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — A teacher evaluation bill that’s part of Gov. Paul LePage education reform package awaits the governor’s signature.

The bill requires school administrators to develop comprehensive performance evaluation systems for teachers and principals. Teachers found to be ineffective would be allowed to implement professional improvement plans.

It also sets statewide standards for teacher and principal evaluation systems.

Other bills the governor supports are pending. One would create a school open enrollment program. The other would allow schools to award diplomas based on a student’s proficiency. Under that policy, students showing mastery of a subject could move at their own pace.
