SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Police arrested two men in the crawl space of a South Portland apartment after a resident reported that prescription drugs had been stolen from a medicine cabinet, police say.

Rourke Sparks, 26, and Derrick Splude, 27, both of South Portland, were arrested Sunday, according to South Portland Detective Sgt. Steve Webster.

A witness notified police after seeing Sparks climb through a window into a second-floor Broadway apartment.

When police got to the scene, the victim told them prescription medication had been taken from a medicine cabinet, Webster said. The victim identified Sparks as a third-floor neighbor.

Police found Sparks and Splude hiding under a tarp in a crawl space and arrested them after an initial search of Sparks’ apartment turned up nothing. Sparks was charged with burglary and theft, and Splude was charged with refusing to submit to arrest and drug possession.

Both suspects remained at the Cumberland County Jail on Monday morning.
