Man arrested in Wells gun theft

SANFORD, Maine — A York County man was arrested Wednesday night after a seven-hour negotiation which followed an alleged burglary at a Wells home, according to police.

Wells police had received a report of a burglary at a Branch Road residence between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday, Police Chief Ruth Farnsworth said in a news release.

On Wednesday, Wells police received a tip from their counterparts in Kennebunk that Jeffrey Labelle, 31, had stolen a handgun, a mounted scope, prescription drugs and jewelry from the Wells home, the release said.

Wells police already had a warrant out for Labelle in connection with a theft, according to the release.

Wells police detectives, along with the York County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police, subsequently conducted interviews and it was learned that Labelle was at a Calvin’s Way residence in Sanford.

When authorities attempted to contact the suspect, he reportedly refused to respond. The Southern Maine Special Response Team was called in and the residence surrounded. A negotiator from the tactical team attempted to make contact with Labelle while a search warrant was obtained to enter the residence.

Just before 6 p.m., seven hours after police initially arrived on the scene, Labelle reportedly left the house and was taken into custody without incident. A search of the house revealed a Smith and Wesson Model 22A .22-caliber handgun with a mounted scope believed to be the same firearm stolen from the home in Wells.

Labelle was charged with burglary and possession of a firearm and taken to the York County Jail, where he remained Thursday. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
