PORTLAND, Maine — Jail officials in Portland say a security breach two weeks ago that allowed a male inmate to sneak out of his cell to have sex with a female inmate wasn’t the jail’s first security lapse.
Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said Friday that a review of jail records prompted by a request from the Portland Press Herald shows that inmates in 2002 got out of their maximum security cells on two occasions and jammed a cell door lock on another. In those cases, the inmates didn’t make it into other cell areas.
The jail is reviewing its security procedures after 23-year-old Arien L’Italien allegedly sneaked out of his cell and crawled into a female inmate area where he met up with a woman who allegedly jammed her cell lock.
