    Summers for Senate

    • Anonymous

You don’t find it interesting or even odd that it’s Summer’s own office that validates these ballots,  ballots that includes his name on them?  Boy; Poliquin and Summers….. as Forrest LePage would say….”Just like peas and carrots”

      • Guest

And who do you believe is the best candidate…?

        • Anonymous

          Neither!!!

        • Anonymous

For the Senate seat??       None of those running.    I would like to think that we would be able to do what we have traditionally done….get very capable, intelligent and exemplary people in the Senate;  our list is long:   Reed (Reed’s Rules, though he wasn’t a senator, he was the Speaker),  Smith,   Muskie,  Mitchell,   Cohen,  and maybe even Snowe.   There are people in the state that can represent us fairly and be concerned about us,   they just don’t want to run in the current political atmosphere, and I don’t blame them.   The reason why Olympia chose not to run again is very, very clear;  now our senior senator is going to be ….Collins, who is pretty much party line.

      • Anonymous

Bill Diamond held the Secretary of State’s Office in the early 90’s when he ran for Congress.  What’s the difference , Diamond didn’t resign while running for the seat unsuccessfully.  So why should Summers do it , oh that’s right he isn’t a Democrat.

        • Anonymous

Correct.  He should be “better” than a Democrat by the way the R’s portray their party.  As such, he should step down.  When he loses, LePage can reinstate him.

          • Tyke

The legislature elects the Secretary of State in Maine. The governor has nothing to do with it.

Where are the details on the challenges in those other races?

Edit: and since I posted that Q, details have been added. Thank you.

  • Anonymous

Matt Dunlap will make quick work of cindy quimby and for this I’m thankful.  She is the worst kind of politician, bought and paid for by the highest bidder.

    • Anonymous

I don’t care for Cynthia “Quimby” Dill either .  Her special election for State Senate says it all you need to know about her .  Last year after her walking on and jumping up and down a Veteran’s Memorial Stone of a dead soldier at a Veteran’s Park in her district .  This woman now is being bought with tens of thousands of dollars from  Roxanne Quimby to support the National Park that most folks in the 2nd District opposes and that is now dead thanks to outcry from folks in the 2nd District.  Voting for one of the Dems or Angus King would be a rubber stamp for the failed policies of the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda.

      • Anonymous

Oh c’mon is that all you’ve got?  The “walking and jumping” on a memorial stone.  Maybe she should have been a bit more conscious of that item, but I doubt she intended to be disrespectful.  There is a large granite block memorial wall in my hometown.  Kids climb up and sit on it, sometime little kids with parents right there espcially tourists in the summer.  I don’t think anyone is trying to be disrespectful.  That tired old stuff was whined about and she pounded her Republican opponent.  All said, I think don’t she’s ready for the US Senate though.  She just got her new state level seat.  She should honor that seat for awhile, and get more experience before shooting for higher office now.

Obama inherited a disasterous mess from W.  Now we have a stock market above 13000, the #1 auto industry in the world that you people wanted to go backrupt thus destroying another million jobs, he took out Bin Laden, and has presided over the creation of 4 million private sector jobs with more every month.  Your GOP TeaNutters have NO jobs plan and have NO plans at all except to destroy anything for the middle class and sell off our state and nation to the highest corporate bidder.  The GOP is a wholely-owned subsidiary of the big corporations, the American middle class be damned.  They GOP is a pile of  unChristian and unPatriotic corporate toadies.

        • Anonymous

Don’t forget they are going to lower taxes for that  trickle down effect and we all know how well that has worked.  (NO WAY)  Lets face it they have no new ideas, same old bull.

          • Guest

It seems I’ve been trickled on for years.

          • Anonymous

            Good one!!!

… it was a paving stone. Which, of course, is designed to be walked on.

        duh

If Michaud has nothing to fear from Raye then why is this Democrat Party Spokeperson working so hard to make sure Raye gets disqualified from running?

Im thinking Michaud and his party would rather see Richardson as the challenger than Raye.

    • Anonymous

Can’t win on the merits, so Michaud is trying to win by cheating.

The guy has been an empty suit for eight years. Time for a change, send Mike back to work with John Martin or something. They are like peas in a pod.

      • Anonymous

Where in that article was Mike Michaud’s name mentioned as being involved in the challenge. The only thing I saw was a statement that Raye is challenging him. And you talk about Democrats changing the subject!!!

        • Anonymous

Are you afraid of a Kevin Raye being the nominee for Republicans.   Because it seems to me Michaud and Democrats are doing everything they can to not only keep him off the ballot but trying to get rid of Current Republican State Legislators so they can easily win those seats.  The Dems can’t run on their records because they don’t have a positive record to run on.  Because they have done nothing but destroy the economy, hurt the working person and destroyed Mainers quality of life.  Now that the districts are redrawn and it could favor Raye , Mumbles Michaud and the Dems are running scared.

          • Anonymous

and the positive record the Republicans have to run on is…… what exactly?

          • Get your head out of your a—

      • Anonymous

From what I understand they were in the pod and they were closer than peas.

      • Anonymous

My understanding of the story is that Raye is trying to deliver petitions that are incorrectly filled out, but you think it is ok to flout the rules for your candidate. So Raye is trying to get on the ballot by cheating, but you think it is ok to cheat if there is an “R” by the name. Yup, the Republican strategy is to win by any means necessary.

Still peed off that you couldn’t deny the vote to some when the referendum was voted down?

      • Tyke

Anyone who makes beginner’s mistakes in fulfilling the simple rules of petition gathering is not ready to be a congressman.

      • Get your head out of your a—-

      • Anonymous

Is it your contention that the Republican Party wouldn’t do this if the shoe was on the other foot?   Both parties look over the other party’s petitions….I think it says more about Raye that he didn’t have this simple thing quality checked before submission.  If you can’t get your petitions in correctly what else are you going to be incompetent about?

    • Tyke

This is much bigger than whether Raye gets to run or not. If the challenge succeeds it indicates what a weak leader and candidate Raye is to begin with. Other candidates in Maine have had very well publicized petition failures so there is no excuse for Raye being this sloppy on such a small and simple – but extremely key – portion of his campaign.

People can try to blame the person challenging the petitions, but Raye has no one to blame but himself.

There is a lot of  anger and wish for revenge that Charlie Webster stirred up with Ron Paul supporters (many of whom were Independents until registering to support Paul in the caucus).

Combine this with an the level of apathy in the party for Mitt Romney. Santorum clearly implied (on mic – the Democratic ads are writing themselves this year) that if Romney is the nominee then we have a choice between two candidates who are essentially the same and would be better off keeping Obama than electing the “etch-a-sketch” candidate  (aka Romney).

If Raye really did mess up his signature drive badly enough to have failed to make it onto the ballot, then voter interest for Republicans could become a huge issue throughout the second district, effecting not just the US House and Senate elections, but all of the races for state legislative seats too.

    • Anonymous

maybe because Raye didn’t complete the paperwork properly. Do we want to see this sloppiness in DC?

    • Anonymous

Mike Michaud and the Maine Democrats are scared beyond belief of Kevin Raye. They have already said they will not field a major candidate for Maine Senate. What if they also lost a 10 year incumbent? The election after they lost the governorship AND legislature! They are in a panic and are grasping at straws.

The Maine Democrat Party is D.O.N.E

  • kcjonez

Rules are rules.  They should apply equally to everyone.

    • StillRelaxin

Is this the kind of eye for detail that Mr. Raye would also be bringing to Washington as a representative of Maine? No thanks. We have a big enough political embarrassment disgracing us already.

      • Anonymous

I know it….I wish Pingree would just resign already

        • StillRelaxin

Nope, she’s not nearly as “Big” of an embarrassment as the one the rest of us are concerned about.  Think hateful toward Mainers and Maine.  Clear now?

          • Anonymous

” Think hateful toward Mainers and Maine.  Clear now?”

Yep, got it…. thinking Pingree and Michaud as they bankrupt the average working person with empty promises and failed programs of ‘equality’ and ‘fairness’

it’s pretty easy to see who is ‘hateful’ toward Mainers

        • Tyke

Unless Representative Pingree was also so incompetent she submitted petitions that are subject to challenge (she didn’t – they have all been accepted and the challenge deadline has passed), Raye alone has the stage here.

But do keep trying to change the subject. It is obvious that is all you’ve got.

        • Anonymous

          LePage is the embarassment.

      • Anonymous

Yes lets give Nancy Pelosi’s 2nd vote two more years of destroying America and running up trillion dollars of debt. Michaud is a feeble minded fraud tied to Pelosi’s apron strings.

        • Anonymous

why do you say such mean things against Mike?

  • Anonymous

    ooops!

  • Guest

Let Charlie Webster count ’em. It’s the only way we can be certain the results are correct.

    • Anonymous

Charlie Webster can’t count his fingers without thinking one of them is trying to mess up the outcome..

    • Anonymous

Charlie Webster probably has to take off his pants and shoes to count to 11.

  • Anonymous

I’d like to know who the other independent candidates are.  Rather dismissive of the BDN to list all candidates except them.  Is the BDN editorial staff deciding we don’t need to know who they are?

    • Anonymous

The don’t need to submit until June so there could be several.

    • Tyke

IT’S being dismissive by not mentioning candidates who don’t need to file for over a month from now?

I always enjoy OUTRAGE caused by total ignorance.

      • Anonymous

No outrage at all.  They referred to several other independents that were running.  Why not list them?  They’ve certainly reported on Democrats and Republicans that were publicly considering running.  Since they reported the potential party candidates why not list the independents who are publicly giving it consideration?  It’s called balanced reporting.

  • hasacluemaine

So, if they get him on a technicality, he will simply run as an independent.

    • Anonymous

He then would have to leave the Republican party, which, in turn, he’d lose the position of Senate President.

      • hasacluemaine

I think he may be termed out in the Senate.

    • Tyke

I’m not sure Maine law permits anyone to run as an Independent who has been enrolled in a party this recently.

  • Anonymous

My understanding is the SOS office has been quite strict on petitions from all candidates and in particular making sure everything is filled out correctly. They have turned back petitions that were not filled out with the party affiliations.  Certainly the town official should have double checked and shows a lack of attention to detail.  A mistake I might have made but still a mistake.

  • Anonymous

Interesting, are the Democrats so afraid of him running? Not that I support him, are the Dems. afraid now?

    • Anonymous

No… As the story states Raye misfiled his petitions thus invalidating them…period. Also  FYI… all the  filings are reviewed for validity… Why didn’t our Secretary of State pick this up….oh,, right ….Charlie Summers “the defender of voting integrity”. B’ bye Kevin.

    • Anonymous

This issue is that he didn’t properly complete the process. Ironic, given he was the one holding everyone else to such a high standard that he clearly doesn’t hold himself to.

Your and Raye’s pathetic attempt to change the subject and derail the conversation is a joke.

      • Anonymous

I am sure that either party has made that mistake, though ultimately he is responsible for those who work under him.

Fortunately  I do not have to change the subject since there are so many libeal comments that happen anyways.  As for my attempt, I am unerolled so I can not vote in your controlled primaries or caucases. It should not matter what party signed it,  maybe it is for chastisement reasons if someone was to vote for another party.

    • Tyke

Or, is this just one more glaring example of incompetence within the Republican party. We’ve had a lot of them this year.

      • Anonymous

You mean like  the glaring incompetence it seems with the Democratic party in the White House? Glad I am unenrolled.

  • Anonymous

Senator Raye was adamant about proof of identity in registering to vote as well as in eliminating same day registration for voting because of possible fraud. He’s the last person who should complain if–and only if–his petitions are in error. If they are, he should quit the race before being forced to do so. A stickler for rules for others has no moral claim to be lax in a related context.

  • Anonymous

Wonder what the Dems are scared of?

    • Anonymous

They are scared of him beating Michaud because he has a good chance this time of doing it.  With the Congressional Districts redrawn and adding more Maine Counties that tend to vote Republican the race is going to be very close this time.  It could tip the scales to saying bye bye to Mumbles Michaud finally after more than 20+ years of Augusta and Washington for Mumbles.

    • Tyke

      Voter petition fraud?

  • Anonymous

I am surprised that anyone was shocked to learn that ol’ Mustardhead would screw up, he is after-all the mastermind of LePage’s Apple Dumpling Gang. Hey, I don’t think that Union Mike is much better so let’s play Dialing-For-Dollars and just pick a name at random from the phone book and send them to Washington.

    • Anonymous

Kevin Raye has done some great for Maine. He is a rational voice and often helps to back LePage down from some radical proposals. President Raye is a true leader in the Maine Legislature and it will be sad when he has to leave.

  • CPPray

I want to know more about the Washington, DC lobbying organization that has had Raye on its payroll for the past couple of years for spouting pros and cons on public policy while an elected official.
Why isn’t that on any of Raye’s resumes or mentioned by the media?
What Maine doesn’t know is ok with republicans?
Raye is more of an insider in the DC beltway than Michaud, Raye spent 18 years working the DC circuit, not counting his current connections, Michaud ten.

    • Anonymous

Didn’t you spend a few years in the beltway too? Does insider meaning voting for the party, what percent of the time would the be for Michaud? Maybe the next 4 years,  they will increase the deficit by 3 times again. If we do not end up in Syria and Iran.

      • CPPray

Yes, I did, but (three buts) 1. I’m not running for elected office, 2. I wasn’t a public official being paid to represent my constituents and on a payroll of a special interest group being paid to speak on public policy, and 3. I want to understand why and how it can happen without the media, or the individual reporting it.  I would oppose a Democrat doing it as well and would call for accountability as well.  I believe in public service, not self service.

        • Anonymous

You are right and there should be more accountability for all of them, regardless if it was Clinton’s mistruth or Bush’s WMD. Another reason maybe the A.G. should be elected, because if it is not the right answer, then I am sure there will be a lawsuit

      • Anonymous

CPPray isn’t running for a federal office now is he?  And,  you can’t blame the democrats solely for “running up the deficit ”   when we had 8 years of war being raged by Bush.   If you remember correctly,  Snowe and Collins were both voting members during his administration and it’s ramifications on our economy, and the Dems did not continually control the congress…..

Syria and Iran.    How’s this:  Al Queda attacks the United States, and we end up attacking …….IRAQ?    A country that did not have any WMD’s and a country that Osama Bin Laden had nothing to do with.    Deficit my #$$$!        Take a look in the republican portfolio and place responsibility equitably. Kevin Raye wants to get to Washington so bad that he has no idea how to follow the simple rules of filing balloting papers, a man of his experience should absolutely know better. His deflection comment is vain and sophomoric, just like his paperwork.

        • Anonymous

I know very  wel lhe is not running. I did not say the democrats were the only ones that ran up the deficit. Though some say Snowe and Collins are moderate, I say they lean more towards the Liberal side, and if Snowe had not  voted to bring the Healthcare mess out of comm. It probably would not have passed, and his now before the Supreme Court. Take a look where the deficit has soared since he has been in office (I know liberals are so fond of saying it is bushes fault) Wasn’t cash for clunkers during this admin.? I could be wrong.

        • Anonymous

Bush wanted to get back at Saddam because Saddam wanted to kill the 1st President Bush. We all paid for George W’s revenge.

  • Anonymous

Desperate measures indeed.  But it is the signatures that count.

  • Anonymous

Let’s look for something bigger than this.  Intent is what should be the decision maker and he sure as hell didn’t intend, thank God, to run as a democrat.

  • Lord Whiteman

Why does  Raye  want to make it tougher for Mainers to vote when he can’t even fill out a simple form correctly.

    • Anonymous

He thinks all people are as numb as he.

  • Anonymous

Don’t blame Michaud if the candidate can’t fill out petitions correctly.  After all wasn’t it Sen. Raye that was behind redistricting the  Congressional Districts so he would have an advantage in the election.  Talk about a dishonest candidate.  Disqualify the petitions and he can go back to selling his mustard to all the people he has disadvantaged while President of the Senate.

    • Anonymous

No, he was not behind the redistricting. The redistricting was a bipartisan committee who came to an agreement. President Raye is one man in a building of 151 Representatives and 35 Senators, he is not a King…

  • Anonymous

If there are requisites in place, that everyone seemed capable themselves of doing, just do them and shut up about it. If you can’t, don’t blame others for your own failures.

  • Anonymous

Kevin Raye is an embarrassment. Let’s keep him here in Maine selling mustard instead of sending him to DC where he will demonstrate to the country that he is not capable of following simple directions and thus further create a laughing stock of this state, like his mentor and fellow tea bag LePage has done.

    • Anonymous

This is a very ignorant comment. He did not circulate every single petition himself, he had MANY volunteers around the state doing it. The fact that they overlooked writing Republican on the back of the form is miniscule. The forms state at the top that they are for Republicans.

How is LePage in any way Kevin Raye’s mentor? Kevin has been a State Senator since LePage was a mayor. President Raye was helping run Olympia Snowe’s offices while LePage was working in mardens. The idea that he is learning from LePage is pure BS.

  • Tyke

There are very specific rules that apply to the information presented to the signers and to the signature gatherers.  It looks like the compliant may involve petitions that do not specifically call out the fact that himself Raye is a Republican. Having the word “Republican” elsewhere on the form may not meet the very specific wording of the law:

    1. Content.
A primary petition must contain the name of only one candidate, his place of residence, his party, the office sought and electoral division. A primary petition may contain as many separate papers as necessary and may contain the candidate’s consent required by section

  • Sidney Bob

What do you expect, most Raye supports sign with an X.

any chance  Nichi Farnham won’t be allowed to run? I have written to you and left phone messages, but never any response. I will vote for Dr Gratwick. I understand he is running against her.
