PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University roughed up University of Maine pitching for 20 hits, including 11 for extra bases, and cruised to a 22-4 baseball victory at Murray Stadium on Thursday.
Cody Slaughter (home run, two singles) and Wes Van boom (homer, 2 doubles) each knocked in five runs for Brown (1-7), which trailed 4-2 but scored three runs in the third and five more in the fourth to begin pulling away.
In addition to the two homers, the hosts piled up eight doubles, including two apiece by Will Marcal, Nick Formaca and Van boom.
Freshman starter Manny Pupo lasted only 1⅔ innings and Luke Morrill of South Thomaston (0-1) came on and surrendered eight hits and eight earned runs in two innings.
Sophomore second baseman Eric White of Brewer pitched a perfect eighth inning in his collegiate pitching debut. He was the last of six UMaine pitchers.
Mike Fransoso posted an RBI single for the Black Bears (6-12). Alex Calbick and Fran Whitten doubled.
Heath Mayo spread out seven hits and four runs (three earned) over eight innings to earn the win for Brown. He struck out two and walked four.
Brown scored eight times in the eighth to ice the win.
Down 2-0, UMaine scored twice in the second inning to tie it. Justin Leisenheimer and Brian Doran singled with one out and Scott Heath of Westbrook followed with a sacrifice fly. Doran stole second and eventually scored on Fransoso’s single.
UMaine grabbed the lead briefly in the third on Calbick’s double, a bunt single by Tyler Patzalek, a walk to Whitten and a run-producing error. Doran added a sacrifice fly.
However, Brown regained the lead in the third on Fornaca’s two-run single and Slaughter’s three-run shot in the fourth helped stake the hosts to a 10-4 lead.
UMaine heads over to Smithfield, R.I., where it begins a three-game series Friday afternoon.
