The Chamber Choir at St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor will perform Dieterich Buxtehude’s monumental cantata cycle Membra Jesu Nostri (1680) Saturday, March 24, 2012 beginning at 7:30 PM.
Buxtehude, who was the great German composer between Schuetz and Bach, wrote this uncommonly beautiful cycle of cantatas (based on a medieval Latin hymn, Salve mundi salutare) in 1680.
The imaginative contemplation of the sufferings of Christ from the feet (Ad pedes) to face (Ad faciem) – by way of the knees, the hands, the side, the breast and the heart – is a masterpiece of Baroque sacred music.
Beautifully scored for choir, soloists organ and strings, we will be joined by Heidi Powell and Richard Hsu (violins) and Abraham Ross (cello). The program will be directed and accompanied by Kevin Birch.
A donation of $10 is suggested.
