Traffic stop in Searsport nets more than 22 ounces of marijuana

SEARSPORT, Maine — A Waldo County deputy who pulled over a vehicle after noticing a defect wound up confiscating more that 22 ounces of marijuana and 5 grams of a powder believed to be the illegal drug ecstasy.

Deputy Arthur Smith of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office was conducting routine patrol operations about 8:15 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18, on Route 1 in Searsport when he noticed a vehicle with a defect and initiated a traffic stop, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

“Smith made observations that led him to believe the vehicle contained drugs and/or drug paraphernalia” and decided to search the vehicle, the release said.

As a result, the deputy seized $3,300 in cash, the marijuana and the powder.

The driver, Stephen Loring, 25, of Searsport was arrested and charged with trafficking in schedule Z drugs (marijuana). Additional charges are likely pending further testing and

investigation, according to the release.
