AUGUSTA, Maine — Senior forward Patrick Stewart scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds as fifth-seeded Bangor avenged two regular-season losses with a 48-31 victory over No. 4 Lawrence of Fairfield in an Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinal Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
The defending state champion Rams (14-5) will play top-ranked Hampden Academy, a 53-38 winner over No. 9 Erskine Academy of South China in the nightcap, in the regional semifinals Wednesday night.
Lawrence ends its season with a 12-7 record.
Bangor, which lost to Lawrence 45-41 at Fairfield in early January and then 37-22 at home on its Senior Night less than two weeks ago, had surpassed that total by halftime of this contest, armed with a 24-18 lead at the break.
The Rams extended that margin to nine points on two occasions during the third quarter, the last time at 32-23 on a 3-pointer by Alex Campbell with 1:39 left in the period.
But Lawrence scored the next seven points to draw within 32-30 on a jumper by Spencer Carey in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs then had several chances to either tie or take the lead, but an exchange of turnovers left Bangor clinging to that two-point lead until Stewart hit two free throws and then converted a three-point play off a press-breaking pass from senior point guard John Szewczyk to give the Rams a 37-30 lead with 4:18 left.
Lawrence would manage just a single free throw the rest of the way as Bangor ended the game with a 17-1 run.
Sophomore guard Xavier Lewis added 11 points for Bangor, eight during the fourth quarter.
Carey led Lawerence with 12 points.
