BATH, Maine — Local police are seeking help from the public in identifying a man who wore a shopping bag on his head Saturday evening while stealing a cash register from a Route 1 convenience store.
The theft, which was captured on video, happened about 8 p.m. Saturday. Police say the video shows the suspect first entering the Clipper Mart at 115 Leeman Highway/Route 1 and inspecting the cash register about 10 minutes before the theft. The suspect returned when the clerk was working in a beverage cooler.
The clerk reported that she came out of the cooler shortly after hearing a ringer associated with the front door, but the cash register already was gone and items had been knocked to the floor.
Security video showed the suspect go into the store and immediately seize the cash register before fleeing. The suspect appeared to be a white male approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a tan jacket with a green collar, brown Carhartt or similar pants and a shopping bag on his head. In the early part of the video — when the subject allegedly was planning the theft, he was wearing a gray sweatshirt with some sort of a white symbol on the left side.
Bath officers, including a police dog, searched the area around the store but did not find the suspect. The dog followed a track to a nearby CarQuest parking lot, where officers recovered a small amount of cash and other items they suspect were related to the theft.
Bath police would like to speak with anyone who may have seen someone hanging around the Leeman Highway Clipper Mart or the Leeman Highway CarQuest between 7:15 and 8 p.m. Saturday. Anyone with information is asked to call the Bath Police Detective Division at 443-8367.
