Three indicted in Halloween crime spree involving kidnapping, burglary

By Ann Bryant, Sun Journal

FARMINGTON, Maine — Three men were indicted Thursday on charges stemming from a Halloween crime spree that involved kidnapping, burglary, robbery, theft and criminal threatening.

Kevin Crandall, 28, of Wilton, Michael Kidd, 20, of Chesterville, and Marcus Thompson, 23, of Farmington were indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on a charge of robbery, two counts of kidnapping, criminal threatening, three counts of theft and three counts of burglary. Crandall and Kidd were also indicted on a charge of violation of condition of release.

The three men are accused of breaking into three homes on Oct. 31 in areas near Mt. Blue High School and taking money, handguns and other items.

In one incident, a couple told police they were held at gunpoint and knives were displayed while they were being robbed. Crandall is accused of staying with the wife while her husband was taken to an ATM machine by the other two.

They were also threatened by the men, who said they would return if the couple spoke to police.

A neighbor near a Hilltop Estate home that was burglarized remembered seeing a blue car with three men inside near the home. Another burglary was reported on the Dutch Gap Road in Chesterville and one on the Lucy Knowles Road.

Police found items stolen from the homes in plain view in a blue car left in a field near the Knowlton Corner Farm that evening. A trained dog tracked Crandall and Thompson to Seamon Road where police arrested them behind the high school.

The car was registered to Kidd’s girlfriend. Kidd was arrested the following afternoon.

In November, Judge Valerie Stanfill set bail at $50,000 cash for Crandall and Kidd and at $30,000 cash for Thompson.
