Relay For Life of Penobscot to kick off Jan. 24 in Bangor

BANGOR —The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Penobscot will get under way at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan, 24, at Hollywood Slots Hotel and Raceway, 500 Main St., with a kickoff rally to launch fundraising efforts for the year. The rally will feature event information, games and honor cancer survivors and caregivers. It also will be an opportunity to register a team for the overnight event to be held Friday and Saturday, May 18-19, at the University of Maine track.

This is the second year that the relay will take place at the University of Maine track. Formerly, the event was held at the Old Town high school track, but due to an increase in participants, new accommodations were needed, organizers said.

Relay For Life of Penobscot in 2011 raised more than $197,000 for local programs of cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services, including transportation for cancer patients and one-on-one support for women with breast cancer. The event included 91 teams who walked the track for 18 hours. In 2012, the Relay For Life planning committee has set a goal to host more than 100 teams and raise at least $205,000.
