BANGOR, Maine — A local man was arrested Wednesday afternoon charged with filing a false public report after he went to the police station and said a police lieutenant took $500 from him earlier in the day, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday.

Shawn Beede, 21, of Bangor showed up at the Bangor Police Station at around 1:30 p.m. with a friend who he claimed saw Lt. Tim Reid rip off Beede about an hour before, the sergeant said.

Reid, who leads the department’s Criminal Investigations Division, was in plain clothes and in an unmarked car at around 12:30 p.m. when he stopped to check on a man, later identified as

Beede, who reportedly was hanging around and acting suspiciously at the corner of Pine and State Streets.

“Beede was alone and comes down with a second guy who said he was there,” Edwards said. “[The second man] came down and claimed he was going to be a witness. After a very short interview it was determined it wasn’t the case.”

Beede was arrested and charged with making a false public report and was taken to Penobscot County Jail. He was later released on bail.

Checking on suspicious behavior happens every day, Edwards said.

“Lt. Reid called on the radio that he was out with the man and Officer Jason Stuart assisted him about a minute later,” the sergeant said in a statement. “Lt. Reid asked for identification from [Beede] and he became argumentative and uncooperative, so he was told to leave the area.”

Beede claims, “Lt. Reid [stole] $500 in cash before Stuart pulled up at the corner” and that Reid “stuffed it in his pocket stating that it was drug money,” Edwards said in the press release. “He said his friend actually witnessed the theft. Beede was insistent that he wanted a receipt for the cash taken or for Lt. Reid to be investigated for stealing his money.”

After separating Beede and his friend and interviewing them individually, Beede was arrested.

Beede was convicted of possessing marijuana in November 2010 and has convictions from 2009 for domestic violence assault and violating his conditions of release, according to prior court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News.
