SOUTH GOULDSBORO, Maine — Police are waiting to hear back from the medical examiner’s office about the identity of a man’s body found on the shore of an island in this Hancock County town on Wednesday.

Someone in a Maine Marine Patrol plane spotted the adult male’s body around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on the shore of Stave Island, which is located in Frenchman Bay between South Gouldsboro and Mount Desert Island.

Sgt. Jay Carroll with the marine patrol said Thursday that the pilot was flying over the area as part of the monthlong search for Wayne Hodgkins, a 57-year-old Sullivan man whose pickup truck was found nearby in early December. Hodgkins last was seen on Dec. 3.

Marine patrol officers, game wardens and deputies from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body, which was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Augusta to identify the remains and determine a cause of death.

Carroll referred additional questions on the case to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation. No other information was available Thursday.
