HERMON, Maine — Hannah Shaw’s strong play throughout the game and Emily Lewis’ six-point spurt late in the fourth quarter rallied Mount Desert Island to a 55-52 girls basketball victory over Hermon on Tuesday night.

Lewis’ efforts included a couple of backdoor layups, a designed setup by the Trojans.

“It’s a safety play, kind of,” said Lewis. “We work on it in practice in case we need it, and it came in handy for us.”

Shaw, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard/forward, had to do her battling inside against the scrappy Hawks, who had won four in a row after an opening-game loss to Presque Isle.

She put up back-to-back shots within a few seconds in the fourth quarter and got the offensive rebound both times, finally getting fouled on the third try.

“If they weren’t going to call the fouls, I had to keep going up strong to get the fouls and the baskets,” said Shaw.

“It was kind of a little war underneath and whoever won the war got the easy layup,” added Shaw. “You gotta keep working until you get the calls.”

Shaw’s defensive rebound and driving layup gave MDI its first lead at 43-41 with 7:18 left in the fourth quarter.

Lewis, a 5-7 junior guard/forward, started the Trojans’ final run to the lead with a 3-pointer with 6:31 left in the third quarter to cut the Hawks’ lead to 35-26.

The Trojans continued their hot hand, outscoring Hermon 19-3 after Lewis’ 3-pointer and taking a 45-41 lead.

MDI pushed it to five at 47-42, but the Trojans didn’t slow down.

“Just because you have a cushion doesn’t mean it’s always going to be there,” said Lewis.

That was what Hermon had discovered.

“I think we got complacent,” said Mikayla Treadwell. “We thought we could put the game away [in the second half].”

Lewis posted two layups and two free throws in the final 2:10 of the game to preserve MDI’s win.

“At halftime, I told them we needed to match [Hermon’s] intensity,” said MDI coach Brent Barker. “… I thought they did very well with that.”

Hermon coach Phil Robinson saw the trouble brewing, especially in the second half.

“We didn’t box out,” he said. “They had a strong post presence.”

The host Hawks jumped ahead early, eventually posting a 13-point lead (31-18) with 2:06 remaining in the second quarter. The bulk of the scoring came from 5-4 sophomore guard Raychel Alley and 5-8 senior forward Treadwell.

MDI roared back from a 31-21 halftime deficit with an 18-10 third quarter that cut the Hawks’ margin to two points entering the final eight minutes.

Delenn Colson tied the game at 41 with two free throws 12 seconds into the final period, and Shaw’s layup 30 seconds later put MDI ahead for good.

Sierra Myrick and Shaw sandwiched two free throws each around a single free throw by Treadwell to go up by five.

Alley’s 3-pointer with 3:12 left cut it to one at 49-48, but Lewis hit her two layups to restore the five-point margin.

Treadwell tossed in a jumper from the lane with 1:07 left, Lewis hit two free throws when Treadwell fouled out with 26.9 seconds to go and an Alley layup made it 55-52.

The Hawks got the ball back with 13.9 seconds remaining, but Alley was unable to put up a 3 to tie it.

She passed to Jenna Crouse, who tried to drive for a basket and draw the foul but got neither.

MDI gained control of the ball and the clock ran out.

Shaw finished with a game-high 24 points for MDI (3-2), Lewis added 12 and Colson had eight.

Alley posted 23 points for Hermon (4-2), Treadwell contributed 16 and Crouse had eight.

“We’ve got to play good defense and box out,” said Barker. “We did that tonight and it paid off.”
