12 pounds of marijuana reportedly seized at Saco video store

SACO, Maine — Police reportedly seized 12 pounds of marijuana from a local video store after a customer informed authorities about the strong stench of the drug.

Officers received a tip on Saturday that drug activity was suspected of taking place at the Xtreme DVD and gaming store, Saco Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland said in an email.

A store employee, Shane Phillips, 39, of Old Orchard Beach, was questioned and more than half a pound of marijuana allegedly was found in his backpack. Police said he was selling pot in hopes of paying bills and buying Christmas presents.

Phillips was charged with drug trafficking, Holland said, and the investigation also led to 12 pounds of pot tucked in storage containers. The marijuana reportedly had a value of $21,000.

Phillips is due in court Feb. 9.
