AUBURN, Maine — The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating two separate car accidents Wednesday that claimed the lives of men from Freeport and Greene.

And in Hollis, another accident took the life of a 41-year-old woman, according to the Press Herald.

According to press releases from the sheriff’s office, 71-year-old Robert Walker of Greene died in a crash on Allen Pond Road about 12:20 p.m. Earlier in the day, 51-year-old Michael Connolly of Freeport died in a single-car crash on Pinkham Brook Road in Durham.

The crash that claimed Connolly was reported about 10 a.m. with a witness saying that the man’s 2003 Kia Spectra had gone off the road and struck a large pine tree near 96 Pinkham Brook Road. Connolly, who was alone in the vehicle, was found deceased at the scene.

Connolly was traveling north on the road when his vehicle went straight instead of around a curve. According to witness statements to police, Connolly’s brake lights never came on and the vehicle appeared to speed up just before going off the road. The car narrowly missed a utility pole and traveled across a lawn and driveway before striking the tree. Personnel from the Durham Fire and Rescue Department extricated Connolly from his car. According to a press release, a medical condition is suspected as the cause of the accident.

A little more than two hours later, a caller reported that a vehicle had gone off Allen Pond Road and rolled over. The first officers on the scene found a green 2002 Pontiac Bonneville with Walker behind the wheel. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Walker was headed north on the road when he lost control of the vehicle, which struck a large rock and a group of trees. Greene Fire and Rescue Personnel extricated Walker from his vehicle.

Both accidents remain under investigation by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

The York County Sheriff’s Office said that Tanya Hart of Limington was traveling on Hollis Road when her 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass left the roadway and hit a truck parked on the side of the road, the Press Herald reported.
