BANGOR, Maine — A Penobscot County jury has awarded a Dixmont woman nearly $300,000 in damages in connection with a Feb. 2, 2009, car accident that seriously injured her knee.

Annette Colangelo of Dixmont on Nov. 22 was awarded $285,000 following a two-day jury trial.

She sued Clermont Begin of Kingfield in Penobscot County Superior Court in October 2010, seeking unspecified damages for medical expenses, lost earnings, pain and suffering.

Colangelo was traveling east on Route 9 in Dixmont when her car was struck by Begin’s van, according to the complaint. Begin, who was on his way to Lincolnville, failed to stop and yield to Colangelo’s car, the jury found.

Efforts to reach Begin’s attorney, David King of Bangor, were unsuccessful Tuesday morning.

Colangelo’s attorney, Lawrence Willey of Bangor, said in a press release issued Friday that with interest and costs, the award is expected to exceed $300,000.

He called the jury award “one of the largest awards for such a knee injury in Maine history.”
