PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man convicted in the shooting death of his roommate has been sentenced to 38 years in prison.

Daudoit Butsitsi was accused of ambushing Serge Mulongo on the night of Feb. 10, 2010, in a revenge killing. Earlier in the day, the two had fought in their apartment and Mulongo later punched Butsitsi through the open window of a car.

The Portland Press Herald says the defense contended Butsitsi went to the building to retrieve his belongings and had a gun for his safety.

Mulongo was shot six times.

The sentence was imposed Thursday in Superior Court.

Moses Okot, the accused driver of the getaway car, pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of felony murder and was ordered to serve three years in prison.
