OK, ladies. You don’t get to go into hibernation just because it’s cold outside. Obviously, rain or snow is a good excuse to hide inside, but thanks to the great gear available nowadays, there are comfortable and stylish options for winter workout wear. Here are my head-to-toe recommendations.
Because warmth escapes from our heads, it’s crucial to wear a hat when spending an extended time outdoors in chilly weather. My pick is Headsweats’ Snowflake Performance Beanie ($22). This hat is made from super-warm yet lightweight fleece, so it keeps your head cozy without feeling cumbersome. The construction is streamlined and tapered, and the beanie can actually be worn under a bike helmet. There’s even a ponytail opening in the back. Check it out at www.headsweats.com.
An excellent cold-weather top is the Women’s Compression Long-Sleeve Crew Top ($16.99) from C9 by Champion for Target. The top utilizes PowerCore Technology, which offers a fitted, supportive and comfortable fit thanks to lots of spandex. See it at www.target.com.
If you have a short-sleeved shirt that you are partial to, make it winter-ready with the Sugoi Sakura Arm Warmers ($40). This arm wear is decorated with cherry blossoms. The signature arm grip promises to keep the warmers securely wrapped around your arm. And should you need to remove the wraps in warmer temperatures, they are compact enough to store in a pocket. You can find them at Real Cyclist at www.realcyclist.com.
The slimming and comfortable Isis for Women PDQ Hoodie ($115) has an inner surface composed of velour-fleeced macrofiber, which is soft, warm and wicks away body moisture. The jacket’s exterior features reflective stars allowing for high visibility in low-light conditions. The hooded sweatshirt comes complete with a zipper, so you won’t have to worry about pulling it on over your head. See them at www.isisforwomen.com.
The C9 Straight-Leg Fitted Running Pant ($27.99) at Target has moisture-wicking technology, which is great when you are sweating out in the cold. With a tie at the waistband and small zippers at the ankles for a secure fit, these tights are really comfortable. See the C9 pant at www.target.com.
For a slightly thicker and warmer pant, try the PDQ Tight ($85) from Isis, which has the same cool features as the aforementioned hooded sweatshirt. See the PDQ Tight at www.isisforwomen.com.
Both running tights have a handy pocket in the rear waistband to hold keys. For someone who has lost her keys while running, I’d say this is an important feature.
If you struggle with cold hands when you’re exercising outside, the Trekker Fleece Gloves ($18) from Craghoppers are the perfect solution. They are snug-fitting and not too bulky. Plus, they have “ripstop” grips, which are handy for grasping a tennis racket, ski poles or handlebars. See the gloves at www.us.craghoppers.com.
What do you do when you are scheduled to meet friends after working out but have no time to run home and change? The Isis Valkyrie Skirt ($89) is the perfect little number to throw on over your running pants or tights. The skirt is constructed with ultra-thin fabrics, which make for a comfortable, breathable and waterproof garment that is stylish enough to meet a friend for coffee in. Are you a skier? This item would be great for the lodge as well. Note: I found that this skirt ran one size too large. See them at www.isisforwomen.com.
