PORTLAND, Maine — A Gorham man who prompted an evacuation around the Eastern Promenade in Portland last summer has pleaded guilty to charges of terrorizing and making a false public report.
Christopher Sanborn was sentenced to three months in jail on Wednesday.
Police evacuated the park and blocked off nearby streets on July 29 after a mental health crisis hotline got a call from someone who described himself as a suicidal Iraq war veteran.
The caller claimed he had a gun and would shoot police who approached him.
Police determined the 30-year-old Sanborn made the call. He was not armed and had no military connections.
The Portland Press Herald reports that a defense attorney said Sanborn has a history of mental illness and called the incident a “cry for help.”
