PORTLAND, Maine — An analysis of Maine Revenue Services numbers shows that the state’s wealthiest residents are concentrated in the Portland area.

Maine has 6,838 tax filers who have annual incomes in the top 1 percent of all residents based on the latest figures.

Those households had an average annual income of nearly $811,000. The statewide average annual income for the same time was nearly $35,000.

Included in Maine’s top earners are Olympia Snowe, Maine’s Republican senator, whose net worth is $19.3 million, according to her financial disclosures, and Donald Sussman, husband of Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat.

MaineToday Media reports that the top-ranking community by income is Cape Elizabeth, home to 338 tax filers in the top 1 percent, with average earnings of about $1.1 million.

Windham is second with 69 filers in the top 1 percent with an average earnings of about $1 million.

Other affluent communities include York, Gorham, Falmouth and Scarborough.

The analysis doesn’t include summer residents and is based solely on tax returns.
