PORTLAND, Maine — Maine authorities say 600 gallons of No. 2 heating oil have spilled at the Portland International Jetport.

The state Department of Environmental Protection said the fuel was released from a malfunctioning pump attached to a 600-gallon tank in the boiler room in the airport’s new terminal. The spill was reported late Thursday morning.

DEP officials say the spill drained into a retention pond through a storm water drainage system. But heavy rains moved a large portion of the spill into the nearby Fore River, where responders have deployed containment boom to prevent it from spreading.
