LEWISTON, Maine — A body found inside an apartment at Place Ste. Marie on Wednesday was identified later Wednesday night as a 26-year-old woman from Greene.

Police said Samantha Folsom was found dead when her parents went to check on her Wednesday afternoon. The 26-year-old had been living in the apartment for at least a year, according to court records.

Her parents became concerned because they had not heard from their daughter in a while, they told police. On her Facebook page, Folsom’s last post was early in the morning Nov. 3.

Local and state police are investigating the death they described Wednesday night as unexplained. Investigators were searching for at least one person of interest late Wednesday.

Sources at the scene said the body had been discovered inside a closet. One source said the body was covered with a tarp. Police did not confirm those reports.

Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said a team of state police detectives was called to the scene by the Lewiston Police Department late Wednesday afternoon to assist with the investigation.

A representative from Maine’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was also called to the scene. That office will seek the cause of death.

Lewiston Police Chief Michael Bussiere said the death was characterized as “unexplained” as of Wednesday night. It was too soon to say, the chief said, whether foul play was involved.

One woman who watched police swarm on the area from her nearby apartment said she had seen a cat being taken out of the apartment. She believed a dog also was inside.

State and local police detectives remained at the scene late Wednesday night, collecting evidence inside the apartment and speaking with neighbors.

Folsom had a minor criminal record for theft and drug possession. She was most recently arrested on a warrant Halloween night in Lewiston. A case of unlawful possession of hydrocodone, stemming from an arrest last year, was recently dismissed in court.

According to McCausland, an autopsy will take place Thursday.
