Maine sixth in the country for drug collection efforts

BANGOR, Maine — Statistics show that Maine is doing its job collecting drugs, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said in a news release on Tuesday.

Maine earned a top ranking nationwide for the largest state collection per capita, while the Pine Tree State also had the largest drug collection in New England, with 14,140 pounds collected, Edwards said in the release. Massachusetts came in second among New England states with 12,464 pounds.

On Oct. 29, Maine participated in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and more than 377,086 pounds of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal were turned in nationwide.

Maine ranked sixth in the country for its total effort on that day, Edwards said, trailing only California, New York, Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
