Lewiston woman pleads guilty to embezzling $120,000 from job

AUGUSTA, Maine — A former bookkeeper at an Augusta dental office has pleaded guilty to embezzling about $120,000 in cash from the practice.

Prosecutors said 47-year-old Celine Davis of Lewiston was sentenced Tuesday to five years in jail.

If she pays back the money, all but six months of the sentence will be suspended. If not, she faces the entire five years behind bars.

Attorneys told a judge in Kennebec County Superior Court that Davis is arranging to repay $70,000 from her retirement funds.

Prosecutors say Davis was a trusted 16-year employee of Augusta Orthodontics responsible for taking payments from customers and entering payments into the computer.

The Kennebec Journal reports that the scheme was uncovered when a customer complained about an erroneous bill.
