OLD TOWN, Maine — A Greenbush woman who was caught red-handed shoplifting items from the Family Dollar store last week was charged with a second felony theft offense after she was linked to another theft at the same store the day before, Old Town police Sgt. Travis Roy said Wednesday.

Police were called to the store just before 8 p.m. Oct. 17 and Megan Yates, 26, pulled a “lighter out of her sleeve and a plastic tablecloth from the back of her pants” in front of Sgt. Scott Casey, Roy said.

Casey charged Yates with felony theft by unauthorized taking because she has prior theft convictions, as well as with felony violation of bail conditions, Roy said.

“That’s a felony because the underlying charge is a felony,” the sergeant said.

While Casey was investigating the Oct. 17 shoplifting, Officer Mike Holmes informed him that he also was investigating a theft from the same store the night before involving a woman who matched Yates’ description and drove the same car.

Holmes charged Yates with felony theft by unauthorized taking.

When Yates got to the Penobscot County Jail, intake officers found a pair of pink pajamas with the store tags still on them stuffed inside her purse, Roy said.

“It was a large shoulder bag,” he said.
