Corinna man accused of stealing gun, leading police on high-speed chase

DEXTER, Maine — A Corinna man who allegedly stole a handgun from a Dexter gun dealer Tuesday reportedly led police on a high-speed chase through Dexter.

Lawrence Cyr, 35, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with theft by unauthorized taking. Additional charges are pending, according to Dexter Police Chief Jim Emerson.

The owner of Pond View Gun Shop reported to police about noon that a man driving an “old beat-up four-door car with a hubcap missing” had stolen a handgun from his shop, according to Emerson.

Emerson spotted the vehicle on Spring Street near the intersection in the early afternoon and pulled out behind it. Cyr allegedly picked up speed when he spotted Emerson and at times was traveling up to 60 mph on the busy street, the police chief said. Emerson said Cyr tried to lose him by turning onto Free and Winter streets and then returning to Spring Street. From there, Cyr continued to Route 94.

Emerson, who was traveling in the department’s pickup truck, said he pulled over to allow Dexter police Sgt. Kevin Wintle, who was driving the department’s faster cruiser, to resume the chase. Emerson followed Wintle.

Wintle continued the chase to the intersection of Jenning’s Hill and Route 94 where Cyr missed a corner and his vehicle hit a telephone pole. The pole was snapped into three pieces, which disrupted power for residents in that area, he said.

Cyr then allegedly fled on foot into a field near Dexter Lumber Co. where he was apprehended by Wintle, who believed Cyr still had the gun, according to police.

Wintle pulled a hamstring during the chase, Emerson said.

Police later found out that the gun store owner’s son had followed Cyr after the theft and had accosted him at a local store, according to Emerson. The owner’s son told police Cyr threw the gun at him.

Assisting Dexter police in the incident were state police and a Piscataquis County deputy.
