Cape Elizabeth residents upset over proposed park fees

The Associated Press

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — Some Cape Elizabeth residents are upset that the Town Council is continuing to consider imposing fees for people who want to use Fort Williams Park on Maine’s Casco Bay.

The council is scheduled to hold a public hearing next month on whether to charge fees for tour buses and trolleys to enter the park.

The town’s Fort Williams Advisory Commission has recommended a $40 entry fee for tour buses and $1,500 for season passes for trolleys. The commission had been charged with finding ways for the park to generate more revenue.

The Portland Press Herald said three trolleys make regular runs from Portland to Fort Williams, and 784 tour buses visited the park last year. The proposed fees would generate $35,860 a year.
