BANGOR, Maine — Two couples walked into J.C. Penney early Saturday evening and after selecting a few items, the women disappeared and the men attempted to leave the Bangor Mall store without paying for the items, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

He said store security officials watched as Joshua Johnson, whose age and place of residence were not listed, selected a winter coat and put it on, and Adam Johnson, 19, of Plymouth, grabbed three T-shirts.

The two women with the men appeared to have removed the clothing tags but left before police arrived at around 5:30 p.m., Edwards said.

Adam Johnson, who was out on bail, was arrested on a charge of theft and taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Monday afternoon, a jail officer said. Joshua Johnson was charged with theft but was not arrested. Whether the two Johnsons are related was not released by police.

The value of the stolen items was not listed, Edwards said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
