HOLDEN — Ron Davis will present “The Big and The Little: Penguins Versus Hummingbirds” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Fields Pond Audubon Center.
In fall 2009, Davis spent two weeks photographing hummingbirds at lower and midaltitudes of the Ecuadorean Andes. In winter 2011, he spent two weeks photographing penguins at the Falkland Islands in the cold waters off the southeast coast of Argentina.
The cost is $5 members, $6 others. For information, call 989-2591.
BANGOR — The Fields Pond Book Discussion Group, led by Joyce Rumery, will discuss “Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World,” by Mark Kurlansky, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Bangor Public Library. The program is free.
The North Atlantic cod, best known as having virtually vanished, ruining the fishing economies of Canada and New England, has — without doubt — changed the world. Kurlansky’s book introduces the fish’s history by taking readers out with some Newfoundland fishermen now employed in surveying the remaining cod population.
