AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s first energy survey of the season indicates heating oil is running 84 cents per gallon ahead of what it cost at this time last year.

The Governor’s Office of Energy Independence and Security said Tuesday that its weekly survey put the average price at $3.50 per gallon.

Director Ken Fletcher said the heating season is kicking off with high prices because of continued economic uncertainty and increasing global demand for oil.

He said there’s no reason to think prices will come down anytime soon. He said the U.S. Department of Energy predicts even higher energy costs because of cold seasonal temperatures.
