Family science fun offered at Challenger center in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine — The Challenger Learning Center of Maine will hold its fourth annual BOO! Science event later this month.

“It’s our biggest event of the year that we do for the kids,” said event coordinator Jennifer Therrien. “We see a lot of familiar faces each year and a lot of new ones. This year we have all the old favorites from past events with some brand new fun experiments for the kids.”

The event was so popular last year that it was divided into two nights this year, Friday, Oct. 21, and Saturday, Oct. 22, according to Therrien. She said she expects this year’s event to have a similar turnout — about 70 children and their families.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 each evening with the “Mad Scientists Laboratory,” featuring chemistry demonstrations. Then there will be hands-on activities for participants until the event concludes at 8 p.m.

“It’s nice to have families do the event together and participate in science activities as a family. That is one of the biggest reasons why we do public events,” Therrien said.

The cost is $8 per child ages 3 and up. There is no charge for adults, but they are expected to accompany their children at all times. Costumes are encouraged for the event and prizes will be awarded for most original and most “sci-fi-tastic” examples.

For information or to preregister, call the Challenger Learning Center of Maine at 990-2900.
