Maine voting campaign promises army of volunteers

AUGUSTA, Maine — The campaign to repeal Maine’s newly adopted voter registration law says more than 1,000 volunteers will begin knocking on doors and calling voters as early as next week to persuade voters to keep the state’s same-day registration policy.

The Protect Maine Votes coalition promises an aggressive grass-roots campaign to reach Maine voters between now and Election Day on Nov. 8.

The group initiated a “people’s veto” campaign to repeal Maine’s law requiring voters to register at least two business days before an election. Repeal would restore a policy allowing registration up to Election Day.

Opponents of the campaign say their poll figures show most Mainers support a two-day registration law. They also expect to organize a coalition to make their case before voters.
