BAR HARBOR, Maine — An Ellsworth man who worked at a local motel has been arrested on a charge of felony theft for allegedly opening room safes and taking money guests had stored inside, according to Bar Harbor police.

Nathaniel Isaacson, 18, was arrested Wednesday morning on a charge of felony theft, according to Officer Eric McLaughlin.

McLaughlin said that a total of more than $2,500 is believed to be missing from three safes at the motel. Isaacson was a housekeeping employee at the motel, which the officer declined to identify publicly.

McLaughlin said $100 was reported missing from one safe on Monday and that more money was reported missing from other safes on Tuesday.

McLaughlin declined to specify how police linked Isaacson to the alleged thefts, but said police were able to determine who had access to the safes at the time the money went missing.

Isaacson was still at Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth as of Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

If convicted of the Class C theft charge, Isaacson could serve a maximum of five years in prison and face a fine of up to $5,000.
