BANGOR — The Bangor Area Children’s Choir will start its year with auditions 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at First Baptist Church, 56 Center St. Under the direction of Steve Weston and Amy Maier, young singers will perform a diverse and challenging repertoire during its 20th anniversary season, including a community celebration in the spring.
BACC is a nonprofit, independent organization that provides an enriching vocal experience to youth from as far away as Ellsworth and Dover-Foxcroft, reinforcing what students receive in school and-or from private lessons by teaching vocal control and listening skills to a smaller group of singers. The environment allows singers to experience a rewarding selection of music that is safe for developing voices. BACC helps its members develop character and presence through its performances.
BACC comprises two groups — the Treble Choir is for those with developing voices who are 9-16; and the Youth Chorale, BACC’s premier ensemble, for more advanced singers up to age 18. With both groups, the emphasis is on careful development of techniques appropriate to their age.
Though BACC relies mostly on tuition, scholarships are available to those who cannot afford the cost. Donors have supported generously BACC’s efforts at providing scholarships to youth of families with financial need. Organizers said they believe that every child who successfully auditions should have the opportunity to experience the unique choral experience the group has to offer. With the average cost less than $10 an hour, board members believe the benefits are well worth the tuition costs.
Weston and Maier are skilled musicians dedicated to the vocal and personal development of the singers. Weston has a master’s degree in choral conducting from New Mexico State University, and Maier earned a master’s degree in piano pedagogy from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
BACC invites youth to audition. Scheduled performances include a winter concert, “The Nutcracker” in conjunction with Bangor Symphony Orchestra and Robinson Ballet, and the 20th anniversary celebration. For information, visit http://www.bangorareachildrenschoir.com.
