Alleged domestic assault lands Madison man behind bars

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

A Somerset County man is in jail after grabbing a woman by her face, shaking her and then threatening her with a knife, police said.

Anthony James Martin, 42, of Madison was arrested Tuesday evening and is facing charges of domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing, criminal mischief and refusing to sign a criminal summons.

Madison police Cpl. Joe Mitchell and Officer Kevin Hartley responded to a 10 p.m. call at a home following a report of a disturbance involving a suspect with a knife, according to an affidavit filed at Somerset County District Court.

When police arrived at the home, the door was slammed on them and Martin refused to tell the officers where his weapons were located, police said.

He was eventually subdued and taken into custody, and the affidavit also stated that Martin was intoxicated.

Martin was taken to the Somerset County Jail where he posted $500 bail. His bail conditions prohibit him from having contact with the victim, returning to the house or to use or possess drugs or alcohol.

His first court date is Sept. 21.
